Software Raises Over $40K
For the Stanford Ronald McDonald House
December 2009
A group of Telosa employees joined Team RMH to run or walk a half
marathon in November to raise money for Ronald McDonald House at
Stanford. As with any such fund raiser, it involved asking our friends
and family to contribute something toward our run or walk.
The technology has made this a simple process. We each had a website
where our friends could easily use their credit cards to make a
donation. We added our own pictures and fund raising pitches to
our pages, and we could watch the totals grow day by day. There's
even a thermometer that showed our progress towards our individual
goals.
The Ronald McDonald House put together a training schedule, outlining
our daily running/walking routine each day leading up to the event.
Some of us went out at lunch and ran around the tree-shaded neighborhoods
of Palo Alto. Others preferred to train before or after work, or
maybe not at all. We didn't keep track of each other, but we each
were acutely aware of the challenge of 13 miles and the shortness
of time between the start of training and race day!
But the biggest challenge for some of us seemed to be getting up
the courage to send out those emails to bring in the donations.
This was surprising, really, considering how we each spend our days
working with development staff at a myriad of organizations across
the world, all raising money.
We reminded ourselves of the basics: no one will give unless you
ask them to; you are not begging on behalf of yourself but inviting
others to join in supporting a worthy cause; almost everyone is
generous and gives money to something so why not this?
This experience reminded us that raising money is not as easy as
it looks. But in spite of that, we have managed toraise over $40,000.
Not bad!
We set ourselves a big goal: to raise money for the families who
use the Ronald McDonald House while their children are patients
at our local children's hospital. But, also to have a great time
together - doing good while having fun. So far it's working.
